The UK grocery market is large, resilient and underpinned by long-term stability. We saw an opportunity to acquire a leading player in a sector with strong cash generation and significant asset backing.
ASDA had been owned by Walmart for a number of years and we believed there was scope to unlock operational upside by running ASDA as a standalone business. Specifically, there was a clear opportunity to grow ASDA through the build out of a proprietary convenience retail business and to launch a loyalty programme to drive incremental sales from a wide customer base.

Following the acquisition, ASDA entered the convenience grocery market and has established a #3 market position from a standing start. The convenience store market is the fastest growing channel within the grocery segment.
In 2024, Allan Leighton was appointed as Chairman, marking his return to ASDA more than 20 years after serving as Chief Executive. Having previously led ASDA through a period of significant growth and operational improvement, Allan brings deep knowledge of the business and the wider UK retail landscape.
ASDA continues to develop its multi-channel platform to enhance customer reach and engagement, underpinned by the successful ASDA Rewards loyalty programme.
