Where we saw the potential

In the early 2000s. we identified the UK casual dining market as a sector with strong structural growth prospects, supported by evolving lifestyle trends. The company was listed at the time and we believed PizzaExpress’s underlying brand strength and market-leading position were undervalued by the public markets.

We saw a fundamentally strong core business that had overextended itself by pursuing an international expansion strategy. With the right operational focus, there was clear potential to revitalise the brand, improve performance, and re-establish strong growth in the UK.

We also recognised the opportunity to consolidate the market by combining PizzaExpress with complementary brands to create a scaled, multi-brand platform.

Our independent mindset in action

Following the public-to-private acquisition, we implemented a comprehensive “back-to-basics” transformation plan to re-energise the business and restore growth.

We appointed a new leadership team and refocused management on the core UK operations. Changes included overhauling the menu offer, improving the branding and driving higher customer service standards.

The subsequent acquisition of ASK in 2004 created a clear market leader in UK casual dining across the PizzaExpress, ASK and Zizzi brands. This also enabled best-practice sharing and cost synergies.

During our ownership, sales and profitability were increased substantially and the integrated group of over 500 restaurants under Gondola Holdings was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2005.
